Reviews & Scores
(these vines were once worked with chemicals, and the Dugats have improved the wine in recent years by forcing the roots deeper since 2004): A bit less dark than some of the foregoing samples. Sexy, complex scents of boysenberry, licorice, smoky lees and animal fur. Less sweet and intense than the other premier crus at this address, and without quite the same energy to its dark berry, dark chocolate and licorice pastille flavors. More vertical than horizontal, showing less mid-palate stuffing to support its tannins. Supple enough but doesn't quite come alive today. Is this passing through a dull stage? These old vines (50 and 70 years of age) never produce more than 25 hectoliters per hectare, according to Loïc Dugat.
VM92January 2018
The Champeaux reveals aromas of wild plum, red berries, dried flowers and a touch of raw cocoa and wood smoke, followed by a full-bodied, velvety palate with superb depth and energy. The wine’s ample chassis of fine, chalky tannins only asserts itself on the precise, mineral finish. Drinking Window 2026 - 2050.
DC93October 2017
Deep-pitched bouquet of cassis, blackberries, grilled meats, rose petals, espresso roast and dark chocolate. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and layered, with a deep, fleshy core of intensely concentrated old vine fruit that largely conceals its fine structuring tannins, underpinned by succulent acids and concluding with a long, palate-staining finish.
