HONG KONG – April 25, 2021 – The stars came out in full force in Hong Kong this weekend, and bidders responded accordingly, as Acker accumulated an impressive US$7.1M/HK$55M in sales. Direct consignments from Martine Saunier, Duroche, Haegelen-Jayer, and Grafe-Lecocq, along with a special experience lot in Champagne hosted by Salon and Delamotte, all attracted intense interest as the world’s top auction house accrued an astonishing 251 New World Records in their two-day auction on Friday and Saturday.
Two of Burgundy’s best names led the Top Ten Lots of the sale, with Bordeaux’s most cherished Chateaux close behind, but it was one Methuselah of 1979 Domaine de la Romanee Conti Romanee Conti that captured first place, selling for HK$1,344,600/US$173,497. DRC hung on in the second spot as well, as six magnums of 1990 DRC La Tache in OWC realized HK$1,294,800/US$167,071. In the third and fourth positions were wines from the personal collection of Martine Saunier, where ten bottles of 1999 and twelve bottles of 1998 Henri Jayer Vosne Romanee Cros Parantoux, brought in HK$1,195,200/US$154,219 and HK$1,045,800/US$134,942 respectively. The buck went back to DRC for fifth place, as a twelve bottle 1991 DRC Assortment in OWC sold for HK$697,200/US$89,961, before a Methuselah of 1979 DRC Richebourg took sixth, going for HK$647,400/US$83,535. Seventh place started a string of Bordeaux’s best, as twelve bottles of 1961 Chateau Palmer in OWC realized HK$547,800/US$70,684. Rounding out the Top Ten in a three-way tie for the eighth spot, all in original wood, were twelve bottles of 1961 Chateau La Mission Haut Brion, six magnums of 2000 Chateau Petrus, and another six magnums of 1989 Chateau Petrus, each of which brought in HK$498,000/US$64,258.
Of the 251 total New World Records, it was once again the combined wines of Lalou Bize-Leroy (Maison Leroy, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine d’Auvenay) that topped the record books with a notable 26 entries, led by a single bottle of 2002 Domaine Leroy Musigny, that realized HK$273,900/US$35,342. Wines from the personal collection of Martine Saunier always stir up a frenzy, led by the record-setting, single bottle of 1978 Henri Jayer Vosne Romanee Cros Parantoux that fetched HK$348,600/US$44,981. Domaine Duroche, Gevrey-Chambertin’s rising superstar, tallied thirteen new records, with a standout Jeroboam of 2017 Chambertin Clos de Beze in OWC selling for HK$42,330/US$5,462. The ghost of Clos Vougeot, Haegelen-Jayer, captured seventeen records, with twelve bottles of their 1993 Clos Vougeot Vieilles Vignes realizing HK$69,720/US$8,996. Noted negociant and distributor, Grafe-Lecocq, accumulated twenty-eight new records, led by one magnum of 1959 Chateau Petrus (Grafe-Lecocq) sold for HK$74,700/US$9,639. Including Salon and Delamotte, over 60 New World Records were achieved by the celebrity cellars in this special sale.
“It has certainly been a whirlwind forty-eight hours for me, as we not only hammered two days of spectacular selections in Hong Kong, but we also finalized our May Delaware auction, which is one of the most beautiful catalogs we have ever made,” exclaimed Acker Chairman, John Kapon. “It was a thrill to have such an assortment of extraordinary collections from Martine Saunier, Duroche, Haegelen-Jayer, Grafe-Lecocq and another Salon/Delamotte experience. We are thrilled to keep the momentum going and spirits high with more Domaine-direct consignments in our May auction, headlined by the worldwide release of the 2019 vintage from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair accompanied by the first-ever NFTs from Burgundy, in addition to Acker’s inaugural Viva Italia! offering, headlined by direct consignments and experiences from five of Italy’s most iconic producers: Antinori, Ornellaia, Quintarelli, Ceretto and Giacosa! The market is certainly celebrating week after week, and we are ecstatic to be offering more of the world’s greatest wines and collections than anyone else in the market, by far.”
The auction season continues for Acker in Delaware on May 12th and 13th and in Hong Kong on May 28th and 29th. Acker is currently accepting wines for its summer “live online” wine and spirits auctions, with weekly web auctions closing every week. For more information, email info@ackerwines.com.
