ACKER DOMINATES MARKET WITH RECORD-SETTING 1ST HALF

Acker surged to $90M worldwide sales for the first half of 2021, increasing its own sales by an astounding 80% over 2020 while outpacing its nearest competitor by over 50%. The market continues to exceed expectations, as total World Records achieved for live auctions in the first half of 2021 have already exceeded 2020’s total tally, achieving nearly 3x for the first six months alone.
America is leading the way in 2021, accounting for 46% of all purchases, up one percentage point from 2020, while greater China (mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan) accounted for 29% percent of all purchases, down from 2020’s 40% market share. The difference is being made up by European and Russian buyers, which well exceeded that difference combined. In addition, as the largest wine auction company offering weekly web sales, Acker has become the benchmark for this sale format, and consignors and buyers are taking advantage. $9M in weekly web sales YTD marks a 20% growth from 2020 in the first half of 2021.
Domaine de la Romanee Conti once again took the top spot in the Top Ten Producers for the first half of 2021, exceeding everyone else’s dollars traded by more than 3x. All five top slots were occupied by Burgundy, showing that the region continues to reign supreme atop the wine market. Domaine Leroy, Armand Rousseau, Comte Liger-Belair and Domaine Dujac claimed the second through fifth places respectively. Chateau Lafite Rothschild stood as the highest-grossing Bordeaux, coming in sixth place followed closely by Chateau Petrus. Champagne cracked the top ten with Salon coming in eighth place, while Domaine Leflaive stood as the only white Burgundy-focused producer to grace the Top Ten, in an impressive ninth place. Rounding out the list was the “newest” First Growth, Chateau Mouton Rothschild.
It is no surprise that the Top Ten Lots were also dominated by DRC, which took six of the top ten spots. Remarkably, there was a tie for the top slot between Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair (who also claimed the top slot last year) and DRC. A barrel of 2019 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Nuits St. Georges and a twelve-bottle case of 1988 Romanee Conti each realized $231,329! DRC emerged in third and fourth places as well with three Jeroboams of 1990 La Tache selling for an impressive $199,200 and three magnums of 2009 Romanee Conti realizing $174,300. The fifth slot went to an exceptionally rare ten bottle lot of 1991 Domaine Leroy Musigny, which sold for $179,923. Romanee Conti tied for the sixth and seventh slots with a Methuselah of 1979 and a six-bottle case of the 1999 each achieving $173,497. Six Magnums of La Tache 1990 sold at $167,070, while slots nine and ten were claimed by the inimitable Henri Jayer for 1999 Vosne Romanee Cros Parantoux in 12 bottle and 10 bottle quantities, selling for $160,645 and $154,219 respectively. Despite greater China’s downturn in overall dollars, eight of the Top Ten lots traded in Hong Kong, demonstrating Chinese desire for the best wines remains strong.
“When we celebrated our 200th Anniversary in 2020, and then finished the year with the highest-grossing total ever for a wine auction house in a year at $122 Million, I thought we had hit the highest note possible,” exclaimed Acker Chairman John Kapon. “Clearly, I wasn’t expecting 2021. Fine and rare wines are one of the greatest gifts to mankind, and it is exciting to see so much enthusiasm in the market today. It is the same excitement I feel every time I open up a great bottle, which I try to do daily! I may not have foreseen the surge in 2021, but I can see into the distant future. Prices will not be going down. Waiting is no longer a viable strategy for building your collection.”
