1 Methuselah 2004 DRC Romanee Conti
12 bottles 2000 G. Roumier Musigny

Acker continued to dominate the wine auction market with $75M in worldwide sales for the first half of 2022. The auction leader maintained double-digit leads over all competitors and held the largest share of the wine auction market, exceeding two major competitors by as much as 67% in volume. New World Records totaled an impressive 7,200 for first half 2022, a 5.2% increase over the same period last year. Wine collectibles once again proved their resiliency with less volatility and more stability than almost every other asset class in 2022, as enthusiasts continued to clamor for the world’s finest and rarest wines.

America upped its share of sales by 10% in 2022, again leading the way with 50% of all dollar volume. Greater China (mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan) inched up its share with 30% percent of all purchases, up from 29% in 2021. Europe accounted for 13% of all dollars, while Brazil and others made up most of the rest. Acker has also become the benchmark for internet-only auctions, capturing $10.7M in weekly web sales year to date and marking almost 20% growth from 2021 in the first half of 2022.

Domaine de la Romanee Conti once again took the number one spot in the Top Ten Producers for the first half of 2022, exceeding everyone else’s dollars traded by more than 2x. Four of the five top slots were occupied by Burgundy, showing that the region continues to reign supreme atop the wine market, increasing its market share to 55% overall. Domaine Leroy, Armand Rousseau and Comte Liger-Belair claimed second, third and fifth place respectively, with Chateau Petrus achieving fourth place. Closing out the Top Ten producers this year so far were Roumier, Lafite Rothschild, Haut Brion, and Domaines Leflaive and Dujac.

“The market is still crazy about its Burgundy and, having just returned from the region for the first time in more than two years and tasting over 100 wines in my time there, I can see certainly see why!” exclaimed Acker Chairman John Kapon. “Bordeaux remains entrenched as the next largest segment in the market at just under twenty percent, slipping just a bit thanks to Burgundy’s gains. California stands firmly in third place with slightly under ten percent, and Champagne, Italy, and Rhone show practically equal shares of the rest. Despite economic volatility, demand for fine wine remains strong, and rare wines continue to prove a stable and top performing asset. Even after some minor market corrections in Q2, it is gratifying to experience over forty-three percent gains over the last two plus years, and we are looking ahead to an exciting and successful Fall season.”

Acker is currently accepting consignments for the Fall auction season, which begins with a sale in the U.S. on September 8th and 9th and a deadline approaching on August 12th. The season continues in Hong Kong on September 24th, with a consignment deadline of August 26th. Acker also has Spirits auctions closing monthly, and weekly web auctions closing each week.
